VIC: Leak to delay City Link tunnel opening until January

Unions say water leaking into a tunnel has delayed the opening of a section of Melbourne's
long-awaited new tollway system until next year.

Victoria's Trades Hall Council says the leaks in City Link's southern tunnel, close to the
city centre, mean the section can't be opened until January.

Water has reportedly been leaking through the floor of the tunnel for some months, causing
the bitumen to lift.

Trades Hall spokesman BRIAN BOYD says water pressure will have to be stabilised before the
floor can be resurfaced.

He says two previous attempts failed, with the surface bubbling up and the water pressure
lifting it in a number of areas.

The tunnel is due to be opened in August.
